What I call a NERD

Before I go on I want to clarify the word NERD and what it means to me.  In my book the word NERD is not a bad thing, or a put down word.  It's just the opposite.  It's a honor to be called a nerd.  Especially from a jock who peeked out in high school who is now working at the local gas station.  And to him I say "20 on pump number six"  Barry Bonds doesn't get upset when you call him a baseball player.  You would be stupid to call Mike Tyson anything other than a boxer to his face.  People put a bad spin on NERD because nerds understand things that many people don't get.  They focus on such things.  And guess what boneheads there is a pecking order within the classification of that word.  I am a nerd of all trades.  I know many nerds things in a general type of way.  I am a General Nerd without any type of  focus.  All that means is I can generally make conversation with any type of  nerd person.  I used to take my old Amiga 500 over to my friends house in the late 80's early 90's to have him work on my machine.  He was a special type of nerd and also a god dam stereotype if I ever saw one.  He would sit upstairs in this Attic type of room with hundreds of  750k diskettes all over the floor.  (Computer CD ROMs had not come out)  He never really took a shower, never brushed his long greasy hair, and had a certain kind of funk that I will never forget.  He loved my machine because it had a 50meg add on hard drive.  Which cost me $500.00 at that time.  He didn't have a hard drive on his machine so he thought it was the greatest thing.   But he did have the internet.  Yes the internet.  He had his very own email account that he could check instantly for mail.  Sure, we all take that for granted now, but back then you had to be a member with a BBS and had access your email from the internet.  The BBS would go out every 12 hours or so and collect the mail for it's account. So even though someone sent you mail, you wouldn't get it for many, many hours.  But that didn't matter because with a 2400 baud modem it would take that long just to log onto your BBS just kidding.
