Fathers Day 93 revisted

Directors Cut

Went thru my collection of home brew vhs tapes this morning and found one called Fathers Day 93. So I popped it in to give it the good old fashion re-run.  Wholly shit is it crazy.  Let me give you some background on this.

From about 92-94 my parents next door neighbors would invite my dad, my brother and myself and on the last year my friend Craig on a camping trip in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, more specifically Spaulding Lake.  It was a guys only weekend consisting of about 13-15 guys and sons ranging from 8-60.  One guy would bring his gold pan and pan for gold on the river banks.  He would always come back with a few flakes.  Understand that we didn't just camp at some random marked with a post number campsite.  We would get to the parking lot, hop in a small fishing boat and find camp somewhere on the lake about 5 miles away.  We had to bring everything in from the boat then if that wasn't exhausting enough we had to find flat ground to put our tents. So when  pops and I were invited I brought my Canon 8mm video camera with a steadie cam pro attachment and decided that my contribution to the trip would be to film, edit and give a copy of the edited piece to all the fathers.

So I popped in the tape and besides the awful hack intro that promoted my other hack video projects at the time like "Cliffhanger" "Anonymous Addict" and "Run on Sale" I saw bad editing all around.  I mean very campy.  The still shots of all guys without names as the introduction of the players.  I'm pretty sure I didn't remember any of the names of the fathers so nstead I just used a still image of them with large font at the bottom of the screen spelling "STARRING"   I just about puked up my breakfast when looking at that no talent piece of shit Amiga 500 overlay.  But let me move on.  The first segment was pretty cool, basically a bunch of guys sitting around the camp just drinking and showing off the bar.  Since this was Fathers Day 93 they were really hamming it up to the camera.  They all had the tape from Fathers day 92 and thought they could out due themselves and 13 years later you can really tell.  After this segment there is the potato gun segment, very interesting, I suggest you Google potato gun if you don't know what that is.  Then we open up on what I call the boat fishing segment.  Bud, some guy with long hair and myself set off to do some lake trolling.  Bud will make you laugh your ass off.  We're sitting in the boat drinking Budweiser and the engine dies on us in the middle of the lake.  Lets just say some jokes ensue and the visual of the two guys drinking while trying to solve their problem will almost make you piss your pants.  Then out of FUCKIN no where the boat is now skimming across the lake to a god dam Phil Collins tune that was obviously edited in by me in post production.  What in the fuck was I thinking laying down "Two Hearts" as the back track!!!!!  And for some reason on this same segment, I would say bass masters in the live audio but the overlay font kept saying fish masters.  Again, way to go genius.

I then watched a whole ten minute segment on cooking dinner.  Keep in mind there was no nightvison camera so it was all shot using propane lamps from the campsite.  I fast forwarded and stoped when I saw a 23 year old version of myself opening a gift in front of the firepit.  When the sound came on I cringed and bashed my head into the coffee table.  I actually laid down the "The Muppet Show" as bed music.  Can you say CHEESY.  Not only is the video quality poor due to the bad lighting but I made it even worse with a gay ass soundtracks.  I got up turned it off and took a nice crap.  Not feeling all bundled up I came back in and turned it on from where I left it off.  Thank god it was only a few more minutes of mundane camp fire stuff.  BOOM, next day.  Looked to be interesting.  Two guys at camp looking at a topography map.  I'm going to tagging along with the camera for a nice long hike.  Next shot is two guys myself in the woods argruing about what direction is which.  Looking good so far...............DAMIT!!!!  I threw in not only still pictures taken from the trip but tried to squeeze some type of sap out of my audience by playing "Summer of 69" by John Cougar Mellencamp.  Actually it does work, it's the best montage of the video so far.  The last still picture is the two guys climbing up the last of the mountain and then the music fades out and the video camera has them talking at the top.
